Is it normal for XP to take more than a minute to shut down? No OS that I've ever used took this much time before। I don't have many programs running when I shut down so I'm not quite sure what the delay is। The activity light is blinking so I know XP is working, I'm just not sure of everything that it's doing as it shuts down।

Start Regedit. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control. Click "Control" Folder. Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" Right click and select Modify. Set it a value lower than 2000 (Mine is set to 200).

Is your PC Taking too Long to Shut Down?

If your computer is taking a minute or more to shut down, here is a quick solution:

1. Update your antivirus / antispyware programs and run them to clean out your computer.
2. Use CCleaner or Glary Utilities to tune up Windows Operating System
3. Finally, follow these steps to speed up the shut down:

  • Go to Start, type Regedit. Once in the Registry, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control. Click "Control" Folder. Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" Right click and select Modify. Set it a value lower than 2000 (I set mine to 100).
These three steps will boost your PC performance as well as save a lot of time and $$$
